There will be a wide variety of very different vessels in the display, celebrating those who have beautifully restored some of the classic powerboats of days gone by, as well as those imaginative Kiwis who have created some of our more unusual floating oddities.
One of the most striking is a beautifully restored classic 1958 Francecraft. Made by Arnold France at his Christchurch yard, the 4.6m boat boasts a stunning retro look and sits on a trailer with a yellow timber cradle on a white steel frame. Originally based in Nelson, it is fitted with a 1964 Johnson Super Sea Horse outboard and is towed by owner Jeff Matthew’s matching 1964 Chevrolet Impala Convertible, one of only 68 right-hand-drive 1964 convertibles made in Canada.
One of the more unusual vessels on display will be the electric classic English river launch, Solarly. A replica of a 1920’s design, she began her life on the upper reaches of the Thames, before moving to a large lake in Switzerland. Now available for hire in Kerikeri, at 6.4m she can take 6 people and cruise at up to 6.5 knots.
Another is the Phil Bolger-designed micro trawler Tugly. Just 4.3m long with a beam of 2.4m, she can sleep two adults and two kids under about 8 years and, with a 45hp outboard, can reach almost 22 knots.
The delightful 1933 7.3m Hacker Craft Happy Days is another sure to turn heads. Built by Carrie Olson in Picton and restored by Craig Marine for Peter Davies, it has been in Peter’s family for 84 yrs. It is powered by a 160hp Ford flathead V8, rebuilt by Rob Cowley.
The 1970s Pelin Empress 26, Lady K, has been loving restored after being bought last year and found to be riddled with rot through the hull, cabin sides and deck. After long hours over many months, she was finally returned to her former glory just in time for the final races of this year’s America’s Cup
Rounding out the display is the 8.6m David Thomas outboard-powered Badnam launch, Sprat; the 4.7m Zip, home-built over 6 years by Brendon Frater using GRP over plywood with Fijian kauri frames and mahogany and yellow cedar deck; the stunning Whio and a just-completed 6.7m Hartley Voyager.
